Is Michael Vick threatened by a rookie in Philly?

The Philadelphia Eagles have gone through some pretty drastic changes over this NFL off-season as they have finally said goodbye to their starting quarterback for the last 11 years in perennial Pro Bowler Donovan McNabb.
Even though Donovan McNabb is still one of the best quarterbacks in this league with a few good years still left in him, the only team he has ever known decided to trade him to their division rival in the Washington Redskins.

This is a highly criticized move to say the least as trading within your division is thought to be taboo in the NFL and in many other professional sports in this country like the NBA or MLB, but the Eagles made a bold move by letting their six-time Pro Bowler head to another team and handing over the starting quarterback position to youngster Kevin Kolb.

Despite still having to prove himself as a legitimate starting quarterback in this league, Kolb played very well in the little time he got behind center last season with Donovan McNabb went out with a rib injury.

In the three games Kolb got into the action last season for the Eagles, the young quarterback threw for 741 yards, five touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) and three interceptions. Two out of the three games Kolb was behind center last year resulted in wins for Philly (Carolina Panthers 38-10, Kansas City Chiefs 34-14), but what was most impressive about his performances was that he got progressively better with more time on the field.

Heading into the 2010-2011 NFL regular season, Kevin Kolb this will be the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, but the debate right now is about who will be number two on the depth chart for head coach Andy Reid.

Last season Kolb was the second quarterback in Philly behind McNabb and even though most people believed that he wouldn’t play more than a couple downs the entire year, Michael Vick got plenty of time on the field despite being the third string quarterback.

This upcoming season it was thought to be inevitable that Kevin Kolb would be number one followed by Michael Vick at number two, but recent developments have rookie quarterback Mike Kafka out of Northwestern giving the former “fastest man in the NFL” a run for his money for the second spot.

Reportedly, Kafka has been really impressing the coaching staff and could end up being the number two guy heading into the NFL regular season.

Obviously, there is a lot of time between now and when the NFL regular season begins on September 12^th for the Philadelphia Eagles when they are set to take on the Green Bay Packers, but with the early indication that Kafka having a legitimate shot at winning the second spot in the QB depth chart and with Vick’s recent off the field troubles, Kafka could be an interesting story from here on out.

Personally, I believe that Michael Vick will ultimately become the number two QB in Philly, but you never know what can happen during training camp and the preseason.
