Kansas City Chiefs claim veteran quarterback Kyle Orton off waivers
The Denver Broncos quarterback situation has been an absolute mess over the last two seasons with three quarterbacks being legitimate starters and the coaching staff having an extremely tough decision to make. With Kyle Orton being the starter last season and at the beginning of this season, new head coach John Fox was getting a lot of criticized from the diehard fans as most of the Broncos faithful were lobbying for second-year quarterback Tim Tebow to be the new starter moving forward.

Even though the Denver Broncos dedicated fan base was all for the Tebow movement in the Mile High City, John Fox and Broncos legend John Elway were not as the two-time BCS champion and former Heisman trophy winner showed no improvement in his passing game. There is no question that Tebow is always a threat on the ground and can scramble as good as any quarterback in the league today, the young quarterback was almost threat through the air.
With that being said, Kyle Orton was the logical choice to be the starter with Brady Quinn backing him up and Tim Tebow bring up the rear. Despite that being the case, Orton was unsuccessful in leading this team to victory early in the season and ultimately lost his starting job. There may have been reports that Quinn was next in line on the quarterback depth chart, but Fox chose to go with Tebow and hasn’t really looked back since as the popular gunslinger has led Denver to four wins in the last five games.
Now that Tim Tebow is seemingly the answer for the Denver Broncos under center for this season at least, the Denver Broncos chose to make another move and waive veteran quarterback Kyle Orton. With this move, the Broncos freed up some money as they no longer have to pay Orton upwards of $2 million dollars for the rest of the season.
After Kyle Orton was put on waivers it didn’t take long before teams became very interested in acquiring the veteran quarterback as the Chicago Bears and the Kansas City Chiefs were in the running to pick him up. With Orton having history with the Bears and franchise quarterback Jay Culter going down last week, the consensus was that he was Chicago bound once again, but that didn’t turn out to be the case as the Chiefs were ahead of the Bears in the waiver order and chose to take him.

With starting quarterback Matt Cassel having a similar injury that could end his season, the Chiefs were also looking for a veteran quarterback to fill the void in the meantime and help Kansas City contend for a second straight AFC West division title. Even though the Chiefs acquired Orton, Kansas City will go with backup Tyler Palko against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night in Week 12.
If Palko struggles and he almost certainly will against the Steelers’ defense, head coach Todd Haley will most likely make the move to get Orton in the game.
