Will Jay Cutler rebound from the worst season of his career?

Last season was a forgettable one to say the least for the Chicago Bears as they ended a season filled with hopes of finally getting back into the playoffs with a lot of disappointment, but they might be able to immediately turn things around as the last two games of the regular season last year looked very promising with Jay Cutler finally coming into his own starting quarterback for the Bears.

There is no question that last season was the worst of Jay Cutler’s career in the NFL as he threw a league-high 26 interceptions and failed to live up to expectations after being traded from the Denver Broncos.

Not since the days of Jim McMahon have the Chicago Bears had a franchise quarterback under center, but even when McMahon was with the Bears, the defense was still the main attraction and the main reason for Chicago’s success.

This time around the Chicago Bears have finally gotten another franchise caliber quarterback in Jay Cutler and the city of Chicago has taken a big sigh of relief as there seems to be hope for the future. Not only do the Bears still have one of the best defenses in the league, especially with the addition of two-time All-Pro defensive end Julius Peppers during the offseason, but Chicago could have very potent offense as well and could turn out to be a sleeper pick in the NFC North division.

Reportedly, Jay Culter has become more and more comfortable under center in Chicago and has created some much needed chemistry with wide receiver Johnny Knox who could end up becoming his favorite target in the Bears’ offense this season. Along with Knox, Cutler will also have two other receivers in Devin Hester and Earl Bennett to play alongside tight end Greg Olsen that have one year of experience with the Pro Bowl gunslinger.

Whether or not Jay Cutler can play consistently well as the Chicago Bears number one guy under center remains to be seen, but he did look pretty good in his first preseason game against the San Diego Chargers where he connected with Knox in his only two pass attempts for 47 yards.

Obviously, Cutler needs much more time under center to get a good feel for any progress he has made, but I am betting the Chicago Bears will be a much better team on both sides of the football this season while possibly being playoff bound.

Even though this team will almost certainly be better with an offense that clicks and a defense that can maintain leads, the Chicago Bears still might be a season away from competing with the likes of Brett Favre’s Minnesota Vikings and Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers.

Despite being arguably the third best team in the NFC North division behind the Vikings and the Packers, they could surprise some people this season playing within their division, especially if Brett Favre retires and hands the team over to Tavaris Jackson.

As of right now, the only way I see the Chicago Bears making it to the playoffs is through the NFC Wildcard, but regardless of how the season turns out, they will almost certainly be an all around better team.
