NFL Week 2: Saints @ 49ers

New Orleans Saints @ San Francisco 49ers Mon. Sept. 20th 8:30pm EST

The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints came into this season as one of the league’s elite teams and a legitimate title contender once again, but despite basically dominating the Indianapolis Colts in the second half of the Super Bowl back in February, Drew Brees and company will have to battle against the odds this season because Peyton Manning’s boys are favored to be the team that comes out on top this time around.

Coming into Week 1, the Saints had their work cut out for them as they faced off against Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings right out of the gate in what was a rematch of the NFC championship game. Even though this was a relatively low scoring affair, New Orleans was able to get the best of the Silver Fox and his squad for the second straight game with the 14-9 victory.

Obviously, the win in Week 1 in a Super Bowl title contender like the Minnesota Vikings was a step in the right direction, but the New Orleans Saints did struggle a bit on offense dealing with the Jared Allen and company.

In Week 2, the Saints will go up against another tough defense in Mike Singletary’s San Francisco 49ers, but despite being considered one of the league’s best defenses in the preseason, the 49ers looked helpless against the revamped Seattle Seahawks in their first outing and were blown out 38-6.

This week Patrick Harris and company will look to bounce back from their disappointing loss to their division rivals by taking down the defending on their home field by the bay.

Even though this would have been a highly anticipated matchup before Week 1, the consensus now is that the 49ers will struggle against the Saints and could be headed for yet another blowout which will leave them bruised and confused.

There is no question that when the San Francisco 49ers are on their A game that they are amongst the best teams in the league on both sides of the football, but after the Seattle Seahawks opened the flood gates in Week 1, Mike Singletary might be scratching his head about how he will look to get the best of Sean Payton’s elite squad.

Personally, I believe the San Francisco 49ers might be able to get back to form in Week 2 against the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, but even if they do get back to form, I still think they won’t be able to contend with the dominance of the Saints of both sides of the football.

It will be interesting to see how Mike Singletary decides to attack the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 on Monday Night Football, but ultimately I believe the end result will tilt in the Saints favor as they will almost certainly begin their season at 2-0 and continue their charge towards competing for another Super Bowl title.
