Detroit Lions make history by starting the season with a perfect 3-0 record

Before the NFL regular season got underway a few weeks ago, one of the teams in the NFC Conference that were getting a lot of attention for potentially being on the verge of a breakout season was the Detroit Lions. With all their star players back healthy and ready to go, the Lions were an extremely talented young team on both sides of the football and the consensus was that this was the year this struggling NFL franchise would finally turn things around.

Every single year there is some team put under the microscope for possibly having a breakout year and usually those teams fail to live up to expectations, but after the first three weeks of the NFL regular season the Detroit Lions have lived up to the hype with three straight wins. As if winning the first three games of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (27-20), Kansas City Chiefs (48-3) and the division rival Minnesota Vikings (26-23) wasn’t enough to get excited about, the Detroit Lions have done something that they haven’t done since 1980 by starting the season with a 3-0 record.

Detroit Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford #9

Matthew Stafford #9

Matthew Stafford has officially become an elite quarterback in the NFL with his performances in the first three weeks of the regular season (599 yards, 7 touchdowns), but his health has been a concern ever since he was drafted with the number one overall pick a few years. So far, so good, but that could quickly change if Stafford’s offensive line fails to give him the protection he needs to stay upright.

Another player that has really been impressive in the same timeframe has been arguably one of the best wide receivers in the game in Calvin Johnson. With or without Stafford throwing the football, Johnson is still an elite player in the NFL, but with Stafford he could become the best player at his position in the league and a good indication of why, are his stats: 117 yards and four touchdowns.

The receiving isn’t eye-popping as of right now, but he has quickly become Matthew Stafford’s favorite target in the passing game over the first three weeks of the NFL regular season and I can’t see that changing anytime soon. Both of these players could be headed towards career numbers and maybe even record-breaking numbers.

One thing is for certain after the impressive come-from-behind victory over the division rival Minnesota Vikings, the Detroit Lions are the real deal this season and seem to be ready to become a legitimate force to be reckoned with in the NFC Conference. Their best bet at making the playoffs this season would be with the NFC Wild Card considering how competitive the NFC North division is right now, but they are 3-0 which is exactly the same record as the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers which means they might be able to challenge Aaron Rodgers and company for the NFC North division title at season’s end.
